Osprey is famous for their excellent packs so it’s safe to say I had high expectations of the Osprey Porter 46. Thankfully, the pack lived up to it’s name and was able to carry everything necessary for two weeks away from home with no trouble. Right away the most valuable feature was the sternum, zip out shoulder, and hip belt straps. Having the ability to maneuver jampacked subways, city streets, airports, and train stations with two free hands was incredibly helpful. In addition, it provided the extra advantage of keeping the suitcase out of puddles on street corners. An additional feature that turned out to be fairly useful were the cushioned grab handles on the top and sides. When the pack wasn’t anchored  to my back, the handles permitted me to carry the bag around easily. Osprey also placed two webbed loop grips on both sides of the large opening, which was excellent for hoisting the bag onto x-ray conveyor belts while proceeding through lots of security check points. The compression straps were useful to keep everything compact and the sliding strap holder was good but when the straps were secured you lost access to a big front pocket on the outside of the access panel. However this wasn’t a deal breaker, it required a little pre-planning when loading the bag. Luckily, there is a smaller(but roomy) pocket at the top of the bag, ideal for quick access to a book, snacks, water, or other small items that you may choose to access more regularly.

Inside the Osprey Porter 46, it’s pretty basic. The zipper panel opens in an exceedingly massive U-shape for straightforward access to the whole space. There's a mesh paneled zipper pocket that runs along one in all the edges of the inside and {also the} underside of the zipper panel also features a mesh pocket for separating smaller things. There aren’t internal compression straps like most hard-sided rolling baggage, therefore packing neatly should be required if you would like to find something quickly.

I’ve traveled with each backpacks and rolling suitcases on numerous trips and though they each have their advantages, the Porter 46 provides you a bit of the best of both packs. The structured side panels give the pack form and security(and protect against you overstuffing the pack), maintaining it within the optimum carry-on size for airlines, but the capacity to transform the pack into a backpack as desired is helpful for getting around places and various modes of transportation easily.

Overall, the Osprey Porter 46 did very well considering all the air-ports and practice programs it noticed over the course of two weeks, and I would love to take it along on another trip. In contrast to other a suitcase set, the marginal $99 cost tag makes it a suitable financial investment if you are a regular visitor. Osprey also makes a bigger version, the Osprey Porter 65 ($129), matched for more time moves, if the Porter 46 is too small for your needs.
